Tucked into the hillsides are a cluster of caves — by some counts around 18 — where Siddhars (enlightened sages and practitioners of Siddha medicine) are said to have meditated for centuries. Names associated with the caves include Bogar, Agastya and Korakka Siddha. The smooth, worn rock faces, natural ventilation and valley-framing apertures hint at their long history of use.
Reaching them is an adventurous trek through forest and medicinal-plant groves, so it suits travellers who enjoy a bit of effort and a strong sense of place.
Good to know
- Hire a local guide — the route is not obvious and the terrain is rugged.
- Go early in the morning; carry water, a torch and good grip footwear.
- Tread respectfully — these remain spiritually significant sites.
- Avoid the trek in heavy rain when rocks turn slippery.
